Bernadette was one of my best friends since grade school so we grew up together (Wagner Jr. high too). I often talked with her over the phone and did visit with her in June 2009, in Philly shortly after I retired that March. With good friends, it's as if you've never left and you just pick up where you left off every time. I did visit with her a few years earlier and she met my husband and little grandson. We already knew each others children. For me, Bernadette was a voice of inspiration. I can say that she never had any ill-will towards anyone. She may not have liked a particular behavior, but she could manage to put a positive light on it. She was a happy no-nonsense person, a faithful servant for God, and actively participated in her church activities. What was fun about Bernadette (for me) was her use of adjectives to describe anything or anyone. She was so funny!! She was happily married, very close to her sister, Betty. What gave her the deepest satisfaction was when her last child, son Chris, graduated from college. She was rightfully proud that she was able to raise and encourage her three children to complete their education beyond high school. She lived to see out of her union with husband, Curtis, one to become an educator, and two become lawyers. Bernadette herself completed a masters degree. She was blessed to also enjoy 2 little grandsons before her passing.
Even in her suffering, and she did suffer, she tried to stay positive and keep family and friends lifted up. It brings tears to my eyes right now as I remember how I didn't even know what she was going through until her final days and conversations I had with her husband, sister, and daughter. Bernadette was the person I called long distance when I felt down and discouraged and she always lifted me. For those of you who did not know your classmate, she was simply a beautiful spirit. I miss her! She passed just before Thanksgiving. She will never be forgotten by those of us who loved her.
