James Toner

James K. Toner

Uncasville - Nov. 14, 1949 - June 27, 2020

James K. Toner, 70, a resident of Hillcrest Estates, died Friday, June 27, 2020. Jim was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 14, 1949 the son of the late Joseph Toner, Jr. and Dorothy (Miller) Toner and the loving husband of Nancy Toner of Uncasville.

Jim grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Olney High School. He then went on to earn a Bachelor and Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State University, where he graduated with honors. While attending Penn State Jim served in the United States Naval Reserves.

From 1974 to 2005 Jim worked at Eastman Kodak in Rochester, New York. He retired as Deputy Department Manager and IPT Supervisor. He held a top secret (IS-SCI) clearance with the United States Government.

In 2005, with grandchildren on the way, Jim and Nancy retired to Uncasville to be closer to them. Jim was not ready to completely retire so he accepted a position as an adjunct professor at Three Rivers Community College and later at Manchester Community College. Jim also taught inmates at Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center. He was a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Economic Commission for the Town of Uncasville, and a senior SCORE consultant. Jim also taught gun safety at the Quaker Hill Gun Club and was a passionate hunter. He loved living at Hillcrest and made many friends. As one resident put it, "Jim was the heart and soul of Hillcrest!"

Jim is survived by his wife Nancy and stepsons Jason Wohlford and John Wohlford and wife Elizabeth; and three grandchildren, Sarah, Kaitlin, and Jack.

Jim wished to be cremated so there will be no calling hours. A Memorial Service will be planned for the fall.

The Woyasz & Son Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

I remember Jim from Creighton.  We hung out then but at Olney, we went separate ways.  Not surprised he was a mechanical engineer; he displayed a penchant for that in Creighton's woodshop and mechanical drawing classes.  RIP Jim.

I also remember Jim from Creighton. He was a pretty smart guy. Back then in our reading class he was way ahead of me . Some kids liked to read and I on the otherhand was not a big reader. I remember being in gym class and the teacher ( I think Mr. Tessler )said "today we're going to do push-ups" . The only thing I could think was ugh. I hated doing push-ups . Mainly because I couldn't do any. This time was different instead of the whole class doing them together , he called out your name one by one. Some of the kids did a couple , some did none like me and then Jim Toner got called he knocked out 20 like it was nothing. I was impressed to say the least. Many years went by and I started exercising and yes started doing push-ups . I would think about Jim doing his 20 , eventually I got myself up to 100. Thanks Jim , R.I.P.

My memories of Jim were mostly from Creighton as well.  Adding on to what Mike said, Jim was one of the biggest "jocks" at Creighton.  He was the best in virtually every sport.  Almost scary good.  We'll miss you.

I find it ironic that Jim and I lived within 20 miles of each other, and never knew it! i'm in Stonington, CT, he was in Uncasville, CT.

RIP,, and condolences to his family
