In Memory

Doris Lewis (McGurk)

Doris Lewis (McGurk)

Doris Anne McGurk
(December 15, 1949 - December 25, 2016)

Doris A. McGurk (nee Lewis) 67 years old of Bensalem lost her valiant battle against esophageal cancer on Christmas Day, Sunday December 25, 2016.

She was born in Philadelphia’s Olney section on December 15, 1949 to Richard C. Lewis and Doris A. Lewis (nee Dowling) and is a graduate of Olney H.S. Doris is predeceased by her loving husband, Joseph T. McGurk.

She leaves her loving daughter, Kimberly A. Brown Krauter, her husband Ken, and their children Jesse and Ethan all of Flourtown; her devoted son, Kevin D. Brown, his wife Jeri, and their children Madison, Lexie, Chase and Mackenzie all of Bensalem; her wonderful Big Brother Richard Lewis and his wife Lynn of Philadelphia; William P. Brown, Jr., father of her children, of Hatfield; and an amazing group of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, coworkers and neighbors.

Doris spent the last 35 years in Bensalem growing and loving her family and friends. As an executive assistant and office manager she spent most of her career with Sodhexo in Washington’s Crossing, Aramark and finally retired from Aria Torresdale Hospital in 2015. There was always room for one more in her home and her heart and under her Christmas tree for family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers, if you needed her she was there. Her focus was her family to whom she devoted countless hours on soccer, baseball, softball and fieldhockey fields through the Valley Athletic Association as well as Bensalem H.S. sports programs and babysitting her Grandchildren was right where she wanted to be.

She was an active member of the Emerald Society for many years and their Fall Fling was one of her favorite annual trips! For a woman who worked full-time, baked, and kept a pristine house without a housekeeper to rarely miss a game is inspiring! An avid music fan who loved the oldies and could NOT sit still while music was playing and she is long known for her moxy, kind heart, and her big beautiful smile; her chocolate chip cookies are legendary and her Christmas Cookies will be talked about for years to come.

Relatives and friends are welcome to join her family on Monday, January 2, 2016 at the Fluehr Funeral Home 864 Bristol Pike, Bensalem, PA 19020. A Visitation will be from 5pm-7pm and a Funeral Service will be held from 7pm-8pm.

Another Visitation will be held on Tuesday morning , January 3, 2016 from 10:00a-11:00am at the Funeral Home followed by burial in Resurrection Cemetery 5201 Hulmeville Road Bensalem, PA 19020.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Keystone Care Hospice 8765 Stenton Avenue Wyndmoor PA 19038

I was so sorry to see another post that we've lost another classmate.  I didn't know Doris well, but do remember her being very friendly.  Condolences to her family.  Rest in peace.

I would have posted the obit sooner but just received it from her daughter Kim yesterday.  Doris and I were dearest friends since we were 5 years old.  She was a wonderful, caring woman with a heart of gold.  Will miss her terribly.

Doris and I were fast friends since we hooked up at Finletter school.  We went to proms together and were in each other's weddings. We were so close that she and her then hubby went on my honeymoon at the Poconos. We had so much fun!  I remember when we were once fishing down the shore, she and I played catch on the beach with a blowfish. We also did a lot of crabbing. That same summer, I remember her Mom giving us both a perm, so we were two curly headed 13-year-olds.  So many memories.  I knew her parents, brother, sister-in-law and grandmother well, not to mention her aunt, uncle and a cousin.  She died on Christmas.  Leave it to her, such a special person, to leave us on such a special day.  May she rest in peace.  I already miss her terribly.

I'm so sorry to hear about Doris' passing.  I am a cancer survivor and I know how important it is to live every day to the fullest I can.  I didn't know Doris in school, but in the past few years I had lunch with her and the Olney Babes from the Philly area.  My deepest sympathies to her family.
